About the agency

What is Triton Sea School?

An international sea education agency. It owns the standard, trains and certifies the instructors, and licenses the centres that teach it. The courses teach children and adults how to be safe, capable and confident in open water.

Do you run the courses yourselves?

No. Licensed centres do, in person, in the water. The agency owns the syllabus and the certification and operates online. That separation is deliberate: it means the standard is the same wherever you take it.

Is Triton Sea School a swim school?

No. Swim schools teach stroke technique in a pool. We teach sea education: reading conditions, breathing and floating calmly, snorkelling skills, and knowing when to stop and signal for help in open water. Sea Quest is open to complete non swimmers. Sea 1 starts with a water check on the day.

Do you teach scuba diving?

No. We teach mask, snorkel and fin skills in the sea, including short, shallow duck dives. We do not teach scuba.

Do you teach lifeguarding or first aid?

No. Those are separate professional qualifications from established agencies. They sit alongside our instructor ratings as a requirement, and are never part of the syllabus.

Courses and levels

What are the levels?

Two core courses, then eight badge challenges. Sea Quest (Starfish) is a half day experience and not a certification. Sea 1: Confident (Turtle) is the core course, and completing it unlocks the badge challenges: Fish Finder, Turtle Watch, Snorkel Skills, Beach Explorer, Weather Watch, Sea Helper, Ocean Hero and Sea Scientist. Collect all eight to become a Triton Sea Ranger.

What is the minimum age?

Five for Sea Quest, with a parent or guardian in the water for children under eight. Six for Sea 1 and the badge challenges, except Sea Helper, which starts at eight. The professional ladder starts at eighteen. Readiness matters more than age, and an instructor may decline a student who is not ready.

How long does a course take?

Sea Quest, Sea 1 and each badge challenge are planned as half day sessions. Your centre shows the exact dates and times when you book.

Can adults do the courses?

Yes. Every level is open to adults. Children are taught using the creature names. Adults and all certificates use the level name, for example Sea 1: Confident.

My child cannot swim. Can they still start?

Yes, with Sea Quest. It is open to non swimmers, with extra flotation, a parent or guardian in the water for children under eight, and direct instructor supervision throughout. Sea 1 starts with a water check on the day, and the instructor will tell you whether it is the right next step.

How many students per instructor?

A maximum of six per instructor, on courses and on Sea Quest. Those are limits, not targets, and an instructor may run a smaller group if conditions call for it.

Is there an exam?

Yes. Written testing starts at Sea 1. Students work through the online lessons and sit a final exam in their account, with a pass mark of 80% and unlimited retakes. All in water testing is carried out by the instructor.

What happens if I fail?

You retake it. Retakes are unlimited. A centre may charge up to one third of the course price for each additional day needed.

How fast can I move up?

As fast as you meet the requirements. There is no minimum waiting time. Once Sea 1 is complete, the badge challenges can be taken in any order.

Do you pass everyone eventually?

No. Every criterion for a level must be demonstrated in the water before the certificate is issued. There is no partial pass and no rounding up. A student who is not ready is told what to work on, and comes back.

Certificates

Do certificates expire?

No. They last for life. After one year, a certified student can take a free refresh test at any licensed centre.

How do I check a certificate is genuine?

Enter the certificate number on the Verify a Certificate page. It confirms the award, the date and the centre that issued it. A certificate that does not verify was not issued by us.

What is on the certificate?

The holder, the award, the date, the centre that taught it and a unique number. The number traces back to the instructor who assessed it and the criteria that were met.

Is the certificate recognised by other agencies?

Triton Sea School is an independent agency and its certifications are its own. They are not a substitute for a diving, swimming or lifeguard qualification.

Booking and cost

How much does a course cost?

Prices are set by each licensed centre, because costs differ by country and by site. Student materials and online learning are always included in the price the centre charges. You can see each centre’s dates and prices on Book a Course.

How do I book?

Find a centre, then book through Book a Course. You give us your details and the centre confirms your place, usually the same day.

What paperwork do I need?

A medical declaration, a liability release and consent forms, all signed inside your own account under My Forms. For anyone under 18, a parent or guardian signs. Nothing can be certified without them.

Centres and instructors

Where can I take a course?

At any licensed centre. See Find a Centre for the current list. Every centre holds a physical location, qualified instructors and current insurance, and is inspected before it opens.

How do I open a sea school?

Apply through For Centres. A centre needs a physical location, at least one certified instructor, suitable equipment and water access, insurance, and it must pass inspection. Dive centres, water sports operators, swim schools, hotels and resorts all qualify.

How do I become an instructor?

Through a licensed centre. The ladder is Assistant, Instructor, Instructor Trainer and Course Director. Entry requires a fitness and swim test to a standard equivalent to a pool lifeguard, including a 400 metre swim in nine minutes. Every rating requires a current medical, a police check for working with children, and professional insurance.

Does my rating move with me?

Yes. A rating is personal and held with the agency, not with a centre. It moves with you to any licensed centre, anywhere.

Can a hotel run a sea school?

Yes, if it becomes a licensed centre and its staff complete the instructor programme. Hotels and resorts use it to offer guests a genuine certified activity rather than an unstructured pool game.
